Ultrasound Guided FNA and Biopsy
Ultrasound guided FNA, and centesis is a minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic procedure. Sedation is usually sufficient to achieve good quality FNA samples, however general anaesthesia is recommended for TruCut biopsies or Cholecentesis.
Coagulation profiling (PT and APTT) is recommended in advance for all patients undergoing TruCut biopsy, with particular emphasis on liver biopsies.
We recommend that patients undergoing TruCut biopsy should be hospitalised for the remainder of the day to monitor for post sampling haemorrhage, which is a rare but known complication.
