Echocardiography
Echocardiography includes B-mode, M-mode, and Doppler assessment using right and left parasternal and subcostal windows.
The measurements obtained provide information on cardiac chamber dimensions, wall thicknesses, systolic and diastolic function, and morphology and function of cardiac valves.
SWI does not provide Breed associated heart testing. For more information please see www.bsava.org.uk/vcs/testing/menu.htm
There are a huge number of cardiac abnormalities that we can detect and diagnose in first opinion practice and once again cardiac imaging plays a huge role in refining the differential diagnosis list and defining the nature of the underlying structural or functional cardiac disease.
Echocardiography enables use to make a detailed assessment of the cardiac and extracardiac structures including the heart chambers, valves, inflow and outflow tracts, pericardial sac, and surrounding pleural and pulmonary structures.
Using this holistic approach, we can make accurate determinations on the cardiac systolic and diastolic function, myocardial and endocardial disease, valvular insufficiency, malformation, stenosis and flow, as well as being able to detect, determine the causation of and treat thoracic and pericardial effusion.
Common indications for echocardiography include:
- Newly diagnosed murmur (grade 2-3 or higher)
- Progressive Cardiac Murmurs
- Monitoring of existing cardiac disease
- Coughing with a possible cardiac indication
- Arrhythmias / Gallop Rhythm
- Dyspnea
- Thrombus
- Exercise intolerance
- Collapse
- Syncope
- Ascites
- Pleural effusion
If you have any questions or think that one of you patients might need some cardiac investigations, please feel free to get in touch and we can provide you with advice on the most appropriate course of action.
NB. We currently do not provide breed associated heart testing. For more information, please see www.bsava.org.uk/vcs/testing/menu.htm
