Ultrasound of the Neck
Ultrasonography of the neck allows evaluation of the small parts of the neck including the thyroid and parathyroid glands, salivary glands, lymph nodes, and vessels including the carotid artery and jugular vein.
This can be used as part of the diagnostic pathway to evaluate many medical issues such as:
– Cervical mass lesions
– Thyroidal nodules or masses
– Parathyroid disease
– Hypercalcemia
– Sialoceles
– Lymph node enlargement
– Foreign bodies
– Trauma
Many tracking foreign bodies such as grass seeds, or traumatic injuries including stick penetration injuries involve the structures of the neck. Ultrasound can be vital in assessing these structures and guiding minimally invasive removal of foreign material, avoiding challenging and risky surgical exploration.
